Moscow, Fall 1987.
Sitting at the library of the Gnesin Music College, I stared in disbelief at a score of a song cycle by Dmitri Shostakovich: From the Jewish Folk Poetry. Was “Jewish,” the word you were supposed to only whisper in public, really on the cover? And was this beautiful, haunting music by one of my favorite composers inspired by the Jewish tradition? I was sixteen years old, a product of the Soviet educational system through and through. Why did I feel such a rush of excitement, such a tug at my heart?

Ever since my discovery at the Moscow library, I have been searching for my own voice. The women in my family never finished their songs, but they called me, and I heard their voices. May they always sing through me and with me.
